S t . M a r y ’ s E p i s c o p a l C h a p e l , a structure of brick, situated 0 1 1 the
north side of Castle street, and erected in 1798 as a dissenting chapel
by seceders from the church o f >St. G iles, was afterw ards con veyed lo
the Church of England and reopened in 1836, w ith various alterations,
including the erection of a p ortico w ith five Corinthian colum ns su p p ort­
ing a pedim ent and a rectangular pedim ented bell tow er above it, con ­
taining one bell, and w ill now seat 1,000 persons. T he livin g is a
perpetual curacy, n et yea rly value about £ 2 4 0 , in the g ift of trustees,
and held since 1895 b y the R ev. Jam es C onsterdine M .A . of L in coln
College, O xford.

The ecclesiastical parish o f T il e h c k s t S t . G eorge was form ed from the
parish o f Tilehurst by Order in C ouncil 29th June, 1882, and incorporated
in the borough of R eading M ich. 1887 : the church, in St. G eorge’s road,
west o f the barracks, erected at a cost of £ 4 ,0 0 0 , is a structure o f red
brick in the E a rly E n glish style, consisting o f chancel, nave, north aisle and
a turret containing one bell : the east end of the nave is raised and
serves as a chancel : there is an inscribed brass to M ajor-G en eral
A. G. Huyshe C .B . com m anding 1st B attalion Princess C h arlotte’s R oya l
Berkshire: R egim ent, w h o died 6 th A u g. 1886: the w est w in dow is filled
w ith stained glass, erected b y M a jor Turner, of the R oy a l Berkshire
Regim ent, in m em ory o f his w ife ; and in 1892 tw o stained w in dow s were
inserted in the north aisle b y officers of the 1st Battalion R oya l Berkshire
Regim ent, to M a jo r F . B . R . H em phill, who was killed b y an accident at
M alta whilst pla yin g polo, June 8 th, 1891 : there are oth er memorial
w indow s to Mrs. W a lter H arper and to officers and men of the 2nd
B attalion B erkshire R egim ent : the chancel w as added in 1893 at the
ost of Sir W alter and L a d y Palm er ; a handsom e w rou ght iron chancel
creen with gates was erected by the late vica r and his w ife in m em ory
f Lieut. R obert A . Stew art R .H .A . w h o died at U m balla, India,
Slanuaiy 22, 1889 ; there is also a brass to P riva te Charles A n drew s,
d.
March 22, 1889, another to P riva te H a rry C ripps, w ho died in South
A frica , 1901, and to Captain Sw in ton , 1905: brasses have also recently
-{been placed in the church to the m em ory of those m em bers o f the 3rd
Battalion of the Berkshire R egim ent, w ho fell in South A fr ic a : a tw oB 'g h t w indow in the north aisle has been filled w ith stained glass by
“»la jo r-G e n e ra l Stew art, also in m em ory o f th ose w h o died in th e recent
war ; tw o stained glass panels have been placed in the chancel apse to the
m em ory o f M iss V iv ia n : there is also a fine altar cross to the m em ory
o f A lbert R yder : the old colours o f the B erksh ire R eg im en t w ere
“ ilaeed here in 1908 : this is the m ilitary church for the regim ents
[uartered here : there are sittin g s for 433 persons. T h e register dates
