edifice o f flint and b rick , in the E a rly E n glish style, co n sistin g of
chancel, n ave, south aisle, n orth porch and low em battled w estern to w e r ,
with som e N orm an w o rk , con ta in in g 6 bells : in th e ch urch are several
m on u m e n ts: the seats are o f oak and th e pu lpit o f
carved oak : th e
east w in d o w is stained : the church was com p letely restored in 1857,
at a cost o f £ 1 ,6 0 0 : there are 320 sittin g s. T h e register dates from
the year 1649. T h e liv in g is a vica ra ge, yea rly value £ 2 0 0 , w ith 26
acres o f glebe and residen ce, in th e g ift o f the D ean and C h apter of
H ereford , and held since 1908 b y th e R e v . H erb ert L lew ely n R ice M .A .
o f Q ueen’ s C ollege, C am bridge. St. M ich ael and A ll A n g els, S p en cer’ s
W o o d , open ed Septem ber 29th, 1908, is a b u ild in g o f b rick w ith stone
d r e ss in g s : an o rg a n was p r ov id ed in 1 9 1 0; th e R ev . F red erick T em ple
L ew arne B .A . o f S elw yn C ollege, C am b ridge, has been cu rate in ch a rge
since 1908. St. M ich a e l’s P arish room , a buildin g o f red b rick in th e
E lizabethan style, w as erected at th e expense o f M rs. H u n ter, and
w a s open ed in 1912. T h ere is a v illa g e h all at S ch ool green, erected in
1913. A F re e C hurch is a t S ch ool green.

M eth o d ist ch a pel at T h ree M ile C ross, and a t S p encer’ s W o o d a C on gre­
ga tion a l chapel, erected in 1837 w ith sittin g s for 250 person s, a tta ch ed
to w h ich is an in stitu te. T h e ch a rities am ou nt to about £ 8 y e a rly , and

is gra vel and clay ; subsoil, gravel. T h e ch ief crops are w h ea t, oats and
b arley. T h e area is 4,292 acres of la n d and 21 o f w a t e r ; rateable
value, £12 ,0 7 2 ; the p op u la tion o f th e civ il parish in 1911 w as 2,372.
T h e p op u la tion attached to th e parish church in 1911 was 1,800.
T h ree M ile C ross is a ham let l-{ m iles w est o f the villa ge. B y L ocal
G overn m en t B oard O rder 23,869, d a ted M a rch 24th , 1889, th a t 'p a rt o f
Shinfield in R ea din g m unicipal b orou gh w as added to St. G iles’ , R e a d in g ,
civil parish.
