the banks o f th e Tham es, w ith a station on th e G rea t W estern ra ilw a y,

w orks erected in 1863. T h e ch u rch o f St. Jam es th e Less is an edifice
o f flint and stone in the D ecora ted style, con sistin g o f ch a n cel, n av e,
n orth aisle, south p o rch and an em b a ttled w estern to w e r con ta in in g a
clo ck and 6 bells : in th e ch u rch is a cu riou s m on u m en t w ith effigy to
Sir J oh n D a vis, o b . 1625, w ho was k n igh ted at the ta k in g o f Gales, in
Spain : th e p u lp it is a beau tifu l specim en o f ca rved oak in the A ra b esq u e
style. Oak ch oir stalls, su b scrib ed fo r b y C hurch m em bers, w ere erected
in 1903 to com m em orate th e coron a tion o f K in g E dw ard, th e Seven th :
there are 300 sittings ; all in th e north aisle are free. T h e re g ister'd a tes
from th e year 1556. T h e livin g is a rectory , n et yearly value £ 3 6 0 ,
w ith 4 acres o f glebe and residence, in th e g ift o f C. 0 . M in chin esq.
and held since 1913 b y the R ev. H u b ert P h illip p s P op e B A . o f U n iv e r Â
s ity College, D urham .

chapels, and a F rien d sâ M eetin g house. C layesm ore S ch ool, a p riv a te
establishm ent in this parish , for 10 0 sons o f gen tlem en, foun ded b y the
presen t headm aster, stands in its ow n grounds o f 200 acres ; th e b u ild Â
in gs, w hich w ere open ed in 1902 b y L ord R ea y, occu p y a site 600 feet
above th e sea level ; w ith class room s, there are w orkshops and la b o ra Â
tories and electric plant. In 1911 a n ew house was added to the school.
B reed on â s ch a rity o f £ 5 2s. 6 d. and D o w n in g â s o f £ 4 15s. 6 d. for coals
are d istributed yearly. B ere C ourt, the residence o f G eorge B ooth T a te
esq. is situated in a picturesque arid retired spot : in 1230 it w as given
b y R ob ert d e B ingham , B ish op o f S alisbury, to the abbot and m on a stery
o f R e a d in g, and on the dissolu tion o f th a t house Sir Joh n D a vis a cquired
it b y purchase, and it afterw ards, in 1671, cam e into the possession of
the late J oh n B reedon esq. B ow d en G reen is th è residence o f M rs.
S pagnoletti.

D u rin g the sum m er m onths
the pla ce is much frequented b y tou rists and anglers, and every a ccom Â
m odation m ay be found at thè E lephant and Y e Old G eorge h otels.
T h e soil is gravel ; su b soil, gravel and chalk. T h e ch ie f crop s are wheat-,,
oats and barley.
T h e area is 1,931 acres o f land and 9 of w a t e r ;
rateable value, £ 1 6 ,0 5 4 ; the p op u la tion in 1911 w as 1,677.
