E U L H A M is a picturesque village and parish, on a g en tle acclivity
com m anding beautiful view s of the surrounding cou n try , 2 m iles south
from the P an gbourn e railw ay sta tion , 2£ north from T b ea le station
both on the G reat W e ste rn ra ilw a y, and 5 w est from R ea d in g , in the
Southern div ision o f the cou n ty, hundred o f T h eale, union o f B radfield.

T h e church o f St. N ich ola s, reb u ilt in 1838, chiefly at th e exp en se of
(he late R e v. John W ild e r M .A . rector 1836-92, is an edifice o f stone
and flint in the E a rly E n glish style, con sistin g o f ch ancel, separated
from the n ave b y a trip le arch, n ave, orga n ch am ber, n orth p o r ch , and
a w estern to w e r w ith pin n acles and a lo fty sp ire, con ta in in g 6 bells, the
g ift o f the late re cto r in 1879 : th e v in dow s are all stained : the church
con tain s several m arble tablets to m em bers o f the W ild e r fa m ily : the
m arble fo n t was presented b y J oh n W ild e r esq. in 1 7 3 3 ; in the yeai
1845 it was in closed in new stone w ork, w ith four m arble colu m n s
given by the R e v . J . W . E den , and placed in the presen t b a p t is t e r y :
the ch urchyard is planted w ith shrubs and evergreens, and in the
cen tre is a beautiful cross o f P ortla n d stone, a bout 14 feet h ig h , the
g ift o f the late rector, rich ly carved w ith various em blem s o f the
B lessed R edeem er and the ITolv T r in it y : there are 120 sittings. T he
register dates from th e yea r 1730
