T h e M em oria l H a ll, S ack v ille stre e t, w as erected in 1902 in m em ory
o f th e late M a rtin H o p e S utton esq. (d. 1901), and is used fo r m eetings
in con n ection w ith G rey F ria rsâ parish.
H o l y T r i n i t y is an ecclesiastical parish, fo rm ed O ctob er 2 9 ,1 8 7 5 , from
S t. M a r y â s : th e ch u rch , erected in 1826 b y th e R e v . G eorg e H u lm e
M .A . o f S hinfield, an d re sto re d in 1888 a t a c o s t o f £ 2 ,1 0 0 , stands
o n th e north sid e o f O x ford road , and is a p lain recta n g u la r edifice of
b rick , con sistin g o f nave and ch an cel, w ith a sto n e fro n t, in w h ich are th ree
lan cet-h ead ed w in d o w s ; o n th e w e ste rn g able is a sm all tu rret c o n ta in Â
in g one b e l l: there are 700 sittin g s, all free. T h e reg ister dates from th e

S t . J o h n t h e E v a n g e l i s t â s is an ecclesiastical parish form ed o u t o f the
parish o f St. G iles, D e ce m b e r 18, 1874 : the chu rch, stan d in g on th e east
side o f W a tlin g to n street, erected in 1837 and rebu ilt in 1872 and 1873, at
a c o s t o f £ 1 1 ,0 9 8 , fr o m the designs o f M r. W . A . D ix o n , is a structure
o f K en tish ra g sto n e , w ith dressings o f B ath and M ansfield ston e, and
consists o f chancel, nave o f five ba ys, aisles, transepts, north and south
p orch es and a w estern tow er w ith sp ire, 150 fe e t in h e ig h t, con ta in in g a
clo ck and one b e ll : there are a b o u t 920 sittin gs, o f w h ich 390 are free.
T h e re g iste r d ates fro m th e y e a r 1873. T h e liv in g is a vica ra g e, net
y early value £ 4 0 0 , w ith residence, in th e g ift o f trustees, and h eld since
1916 b y th e R e v . W . B r itto n B .D .
S t . S t e p h e n â s C h u r c h , i n O rts road, erected in 1865 and enlarged
in 1886, a t a c o s t o f £ 1 ,5 0 0 , is a b u ild in g o f d a rk red b r ic k relieved
w i t h bands o f w h ite and g re y , in the E a rly E n g lish s ty le , and consists
o f chan cel, nave o f th ree ba ys, north and sou th aisles, sou th chapel
and north p orch , and a tu rret on th e w estern g a b le containin g 2 bells : this
c h u r c h is attach ed to th a t o f S t. John the E v a n g elist, and affords 530
s i t t i n g s , all b e in g free.
