U od er the abore A ct, Berkshire, except a certain borough, see below (a),
after the 1st A p ril, 1889, fo r the purposes o f the A ct, becam e an adm inisÂ
trative county (sec. 46 ), governed b y a C ounty C ouncil, consisting o f
chairm an, aldermen and coun cillors (th e num ber o f councillors being
determ ined b y tho L ocal Governm ent B oard ), to be elected in manner
prescribed b y the A ct (sec. 2 ).
T he chairman, b y virtue o f his office, is a ju stice o f the peace fo r the
county, w ith ou t qualification (sec. 46).
The police o f the cou n ts re now under the con trol o f a standing jo in t comÂ
m ittee o f the (Juu-eer Sessions and the C ounty C ouncil, appointed as
therein mentioned (sec. 9).
T he coroners fo r the coun ty are elected b y the C ou n ty C onncil, and the
clerk o f the peace was ap p oin ted b y Quarter Sessions before the passing
o f the L ocal Governm ent A ct, 1888.
T he clerk o f the peace fo r the cou n ty is also clerk o f the C oun ty C onncil
(sec. 8 3 -1 ).
