fPTTBLETT is a village and parish in a
pleasant position on 'the banks of the
Thames, 3J m iles west-north-west from
Reading, t| west from Tilehurst station
and 2 east from Pangbourne station, on
the Great W estern railway, in the Southern
division of the county, hundred of Theale,
Bradfield union, petty sessional division
and county court district o f Reading,
rural deanery of Bradfield, archdeaconry of
Berks and diocese of Oxford. The church
of St. Mary, beautifully situated on the
banks of the Tham es, half a m ile from
the village, is a building of flint and
stone in the Early English stylo, consist­
in g of chancel, nave, north aisle, south
porch and a small embattled western
tower of brick, with pinnacles, containing
6 b e lls : the church, with the exception
o f the tower, was rebuilt in 1870: there
is a good Norman arch, originally form ­
ing the entrance to the chancel, bu t now
between the chancel and the organ

Norman f o n t : the arms of the Bolingbroke fam ily, who form erly had property
in this parish, are affixed to the south
front o f the to w e r: there is a lych-gate
o f oak at the entrance of the churchyard,
and there are 170 sittings, 63 being frre.
The register dates from the year 1660.
The living is a rectory, net yearly value
£260, including 17 acres of glebe, with
residence, in the gift of the Lord Chan­
cellor, and held since 1915 by the Rev.
Richard Henry Pring M .A. of Trinity Col­
lege, Dublin. Purley Hall, a- handsome
mansion of brick, erected in 1609, and
pleasantly, situated
in fine park-like
grounds, is the property of the Rev. Henry
Charles W ilder M .A. rector of Sulham,
and the residence of . M rs. Elkington.
Purley I'ark, n large bu ildin g of Portland
stone in the Italian style, situated on the
banks of the river Tham es, within an
enclosed park, is the residence of Mrs. D.
