E N D is a hamlet and
ecclesiastical
jarish, form ed December
29th, 1853, cn t of portions of the civil
parishes of Sh plake, Sonning and Caversham ; the Car ersham portion was constiÂ
tuted a civil ja rish June 14, 1894, by an
order of the Join t C om m ittee of the
Oxfordshire, Jerks and Bucks County
C ouncils, bu t on March 1st. 1902, the
civil was re-named Kidm ore End, and a
portion of i t acres was re-transforred
Nov. 1911 ; the village is 6 } m iles northÂ
east from
Pi ngbourno station and 6J
south-west from Henley-on-Tham es terÂ
minal station, both on the Great W estern
railway, and 5 m iles north from Readme,
in the Sonthirn division of the county,
petty sessional division of Henley, union
of H enley-on-Tham es, county court disÂ
trict of Reading, rural deanery of Henley
and archdeaconry and diocese of Oxford.
The church of St. John the Baptist, built
in 1852, is an edifice of Hint and stcne in
the E arly English style, and consists of
chancel, nave, north porch, vestry and a
turret contairing one b e ll: the windows
are stained and include a m em orial winÂ
dow presented to the church by C. M.
W orthington :sq. of Dyson's w ood : there
are 220 sittings. The register dates from
the year 1854. The living is a vicarage,
net incom e I 240, with residence and i t
acres o f glebi-, in the gift of the Bishop
o f Oxford, a ad held since 1916 by the
Rev. Bertram Hugh Bird M .A. ; an addiÂ
tional /T o o a year was added to the living
in May, 1877 by Miss Palmer, of Holme
Park, Sonning, and ¿ 5 0 by the EcclesiasÂ
tical Commissioners. A Church R oom for
p ublic m eetii gs, m enâ s clubs and Church
ladsâ brigade was opened in 1902. At
Gallows Tre> com m on is a Prim itive
M ethodist ch ipel, bu ilt 1873, and at SonÂ
ning Com m on is a Hall, built in 1908
with 200 sittings, belonging to the Congregationalisis.
Cane End House, the

Vanderstegen esq. J.P. is a mansion of
very ancient date.
