On the Shinfleld road, established 1890 , w ith the sanction o f the L on d on
y early m eeting o f the S ociety o f Friends & under the m anagem ent o f
members o f that body, is about tw o m iles south o f the R eading railw ay
s ta tio n s : origin ally a square brick mansion, it ha9 been ad ap ted to
sch ool purposes & very extensive additions have been made, so that
it w ill now h o ld 33 students; a second house has boen b u ilt on m ost
p e rfe ct plans, to accom m odate 35 pupils. T he sch ool stands w ithin a
park o f 45 acres o f park land, & a sanatorium fo r 12 patients has beeD
bu ilt at som e distance from the school h o u s e : there are also a
central hall and fo r m room s, fu lly-e q u ip p ed science bu ildin gs, a

W ere founded from certain charities left by John K en drick in 1624 , &
by M ary K endrick,consisting o f a portion o f a freehold farm at T ilehurst,
tw o freehold cottages at W altham St. Lawrence & a sum o f £626 in
Consols. These charities were diverted by the Endow ed Schools Com ­
missioners to educational purposes & a M idd le Class school fo r boys
erected in Queen’s road, a sim ilar school fo r g irls being established on
prem ises b elon gin g to the C orporation in W e llin g ton st. These schools
take an interm ediate position betw een the N ational & Gram m ar S c h o o ls ;
th e y are non-sectarian, & deserving scholars from the elem entary schools,
after exam ination,are aw arded exhibitions in the form o f partial o r total
exem ption from fees, the governors having also the pow er to d efra y the
educational expenses o f select pupils from these schools at the G ram m ar
school o r some piece o f high er education, fo r a term o f three y e a r s; the
boys’ school now numbers over 230 scholars & the g irls’ sch ool 200

T H E B L U E CO A T SCHOOL,
Brunsw ick house, 42 Bath road, was founded in 1646 b y M r. Riehdrd
A ldw orth, nf Ruscom be, Berks, & M ilk street, L ondon, m .p. fo r R ead in g
& A u d ito r o f the E xchequer, who gave fo r its endow m ent the sura of
£ 4 , 000, augmented in 1666 w ith £ 1,000 given b y S ir T hom as R ich hurt,
o f S u n n in g ; in 1720 b y £ 1,200, given by M r. John W est, & w ith sm aller
bequests b y M r. John P o tte n g e r& M r. John H all. Iu 1723, Mr. W illiam
M althusgave a rent-charge o f £90 yearly, fo r the education o f 10 boys, to
b e cloth ed in green. There are b ow 33 boys on this foundation, w ho
are cloth ed, fed & educated, besides 30 day scholars. Entrance by
com petitive exam ination.

value o f about £36 each & ten dav scholarships o f ab ou t £ 7 each are
