COLLEGE, READING.

University College, Reading, situate in London road, was founded
in 1892 & was origin ally established in tw o buildings in V alp y street
as part o f the U niversity E xten sion Scheme.
Since 1901, proposals
to rebuild the C ollege upon a larger site stetd ily acquired forco &
urgency o w in g to the g row th o f the Institution. Considerable difficulty
arose, however, in connection w ith the effort to find a suitable site,
bu t in June, 1904, M r. A lfred Palm er presented to the C ollege a site
of about six acres centrally situated in London road.
In 1907 the
Council conferred .tho title o f P rofessor upon certain o f the principal
m embers o f the teaching staff.
A t the same time a F aculty of Letters
& a F aculty o f Science were established, & a Dean appointed for
each F aculty. In 1913 a F aculty o f A griculture & H orticu ltu re was
established.
The C ollege is now one o f the fourteen English U niversities & Colleges in
receipt o f a Treasury grant fo r the furtherance o f U niversity work. It
has an endow m ent o f o v er ¿ 2 5 0 , 0 0 0 , 0f w hich £ 2 0 0 , 0 0 0 was presented
in 1911 us a U niversity E ndow m ent Fund, L ad y W antage contributing
¿ 5 0 ,0 0 0 , the R ig h t H on. G . W . Palm er & Mrs. P alm er ¿ 1 0 0 ,0 0 0 & M r.
A lfred Palm er ¿ 5 0 ,0 0 0 , together with a g ift o f land, with a view to
enabling the C ollege, w ithin the next fou r years, t.o ap p ly fo r a
charter as an independent U niversity. The College is affiliated to the
U niversity o f O xford. I t provides com plete courses o f instruction fo r
the degree exam inations (external)' in A rts & Science o f the University
o f L ondon. I t is subsidised by the Board o f Agriculture, & its
facilities fo r training in agriculture, d a iryin g & horticulture fo r men
& wom en are unusually com plete.
Its students are able to obtain
diplom as in agriculture, dairying & horticulture, awarded after exam i­
nation b y a com m ittee representative o f the U niversity o f O xford &
the U niversity C o lle g e ; they are also prepared fo r the degree exam i­
nation in agricu ltu re o f the U niversity o f London.
Certificates in
agriculture, dairyin g & horticulture are awarded after shorter
courses.
T he C ollege is recognised fo r tho training o f teachers fo r
elementary schools b y the Board o f E ducation. Students,in the elemen­
tary training departm ent are able to follow courses o f study leading
to a U niversity degree in arts orscieneo. T he C ollege is also recognised
by the Board o f E ducation as a training college fo r women teachers fo r
secondary schools.
P relim inary scientific courses are provided fo r
m edical & dental students.
There is a departm ent o f fine arts, recognised as a school o f art by the
Board o f E d u ca tion ; instruction is given in draw ing, painting, m odel­
ling, architecture, handicrafts, design & m ethods o f teaching.
A
diplom a in fine art & certificates in crafts are awarded.
There is a
departm ent o f music w ith a varied & com prehensive range o f teaching ;
a diplom a in m usic is awarded. Lastly, the departm ent o f comm erce
& technical subjects gives teaching in connection w ith a diplom a & a
