plements of flint, together with the bones
of m amm als, have been found in the
gravel pits here.
D uring the summer
m onths the place is m uch frequented by
tourists and anglers, and every accom Â
m odation m ay be found at the Elephant
and Y e Old George hotels. The soil is
gravel ; subsoil, gravel and chalk. The
chief crops are wheat, oats and barley.
T he area is 1,853 acres of land and 9 of
w ater; rateable value, ^17,954 ; the popuÂ
lation in 19^ was 1,677.
