laundry, servants’ d o rm ito rie s and d w e llin g s fo r p riv a te n u rses; an
additional w in g w as ad d ed in 1911, com p risin g an ey e th eatre, ch ild ren ’s
w ard and casu alty w ard. T h e re is a C on valescen t F u n d for d isch a rg ed
patients, adm in istered b y th e board o f m a n a g e m en t: the h osp ita l is
su pported b y v o lu n ta ry co n trib u tio n s raised in the c o u n ty , an d has 188
b e d s ; the num ber o f in -p a tie n ts in 1913 w a s 2 ,3 3 6 , an d o f ou t-p atien ts,
6,407’ ; casualties, 3,689.
T he H e le n a N u rsin g H o m e , B r o w n lo w ro a d , op en ed in 1878, is in­
tended fo r p o o r ladies su ffering from incurable m aladies and n eed in g care
and nu rsing, such as are in the later stages o f illn ess, hom eless and
w ithout relation s able to nurse o r su p p ort t h e m ; cases o f in fectiou s and
mental d isord ers are ineligible. P atien ts p a y from £ 2 10s. m on th ly in
advance, an d are re ceiv ed in the first instance fo r th ree m onths. A ll
applications fo r adm ission m ust b e m ade to the la d y in charge, w h o
w ill fu rn ish th e ap p lican t w ith c o p y .o f the rules, form s o f ap p lication
and form s o f m edical certificates required.

with stone dressings in th e G o th ic sty le, on th e sou th sid e o f C astle street,
erected in 1864-65 from designs b y jilr. W illia m H en ry W o o d m a n , archi­
t e c t ; th ese co n sist o f tw o ro w s o f hou ses o n eith er side o f a r o a d w a y ,
each ro w bein g d iv id e d in to fou r separate b l o c k s ; an d th e y are availahlo
in all fo r 32 inm ates, eith er m en or w o m e n , v iz. : — 16 fo r the g en eral
charities and 16 fo r th e church charities.

charities are g iv e n m o stly in sm all p e n sio n s fo r a g ed p arish ion ers and
numerous g ifts o f b read , g r o ce r y , m eat, flannel, c a lic o and coals.
T h e R e a d in g M u n icip al C hurch C harities prod u ced in 1908 a gross
incom e o f £ 2 ,3 4 3 10s. 7d.

road, w as begun In A p r il, 1866, and occu pied in Ju n e, 1 8 6 7 : it is a
bu ilding o f local red b rick , in th e E lizabethan s t y le , designed b y M r.
W . H . W o o d m a n , a rch itect, o f R e a d in g , and w as erected at a tota l co st
o f ab ou t £ 8 ,1 0 0 . I t has since been exten ded and rem od elled b y th e
erection o f new bu ild in gs a t a c o s t o f n e a rly £ 3 0 ,0 0 0 , from plans b y
Messrs. C. S m ith an d S on an d M r. J . G reenaw ay, arch itects, o f R ead in g,
