S t. A g n e s ’ C h u k c h , in S ilv e r street, attach ed to S t. G iles’s, d ed i­
ca te d A p ril 30 th , 1904, is a m ission church o f iron to w h ich w as ad d ed
a b rick chan cel, and w ill seat 2 0 0 .
S t . M i c h a e l a n d A l l A n g e l s ’ ( T e m p o r a r y ) C h u r c h , in E lg a r road ,
is also a tta ch ed to St. G ile s’ s ; it w as erected in 1899 at a c o s t o f £ 1 ,7 5 0 .
W h e n the ch u rch is b u ilt o n the rem a in in g p a rt o f th e site, the p resent
b u ildin g w ill be used as th e S unday S ch ool.
T h e C h u r c h o p S t . L a u r e n c e , on th e n orth -ea st sid e o f the m arket
p lace is a b u ild in g o f flin t and ston e, in th e E a rly E n g lish an d P e rp e n ­
dicular s t y l e s : it was p a rtia lly re b u ilt in 1434, and consists o f chancel,
nave o f five ba ys, n o rth aisle, w ith ch a n tr y ch ap el, sou th p orch and a
fine w estern tow er o f flint an d ston e 89 ft . h ig h an d con tain in g 10
bells, the largest w e ig h in g 4,109 lb. ; th e ten or bell w as re-cast o n Jan.
10, 1882, an d th e w eig h t was then increased fro m 23 to 2 4 c w t s .: the
tow er is P erp en d icu lar, and has octa gon a l tu rrets a t th e a n gles, rising
into sp irelets a b o v e th e p a ra p e t, w h ic h is b a ttle m e n te d : th e u orth aisle,
called also St. J o h n ’s chapel from its h a v in g been used b y the sisters
o f the h osp ita l o f th a t nam e, retains its origin al r o o f : this aisle an d the
chan cel w ere restored in 1848, an d m ost o f th e w in d ow s filled w ith
stained g la s s : the rem aind er o f th e ch u rch was restored in 1867-8, w h en
the chu rch w a lk o r piazza, bu ilt b y J. B lagrave on th e sou th side in
1619, was rem ov ed , th e in te rio r re-seated, an d tw o stain ed w in d ow s
inserted, a t a total cost, o f £ 4 ,0 0 0 , an d fu rth er in 1882, a t a cost o f
£ 4 ,5 8 0 : on the sou th side o f th e nave lies bu ried J o h n B la g ra v e, au th or
o f “ T h e M a th em atical J e w e ll,” w h o died 9 A u g . 1611, an d on th e w all
ab ove is a curious p ain ted m onum ent, w ith h is d em i-efiigy in cloak
and ruff, h o ld in g a sku ll in one hand an d a qu ad ra n t in the oth er,
w ith th e in s c r ip tio n :

“ Johannes B lagravius,

Cum m atre sepultus : ”
A figui'e in ruff and h a t, kneelin g a t a desk, com m em orates M arth a, w ife
o f C harles Jtam ley, ob . 1636; there are a few m em orials to th e H u ngerfords o f W ilts , a m ural m on u m en t to R ich a rd F y n n em ore, ob . 1664,
and brasses to E d w a rd B u tle r, g eu t. fiv e tim es m a y or o f R ea d in g ,
ob. 1584, and A lice his w ife, 1 5 8 3 ; J o h n K e n t, bu rgess, and J oa n his
w ife, w ith h alf-effigies, c. 1 4 1 5 : an d W a lte r B a rton , g en t. 1538, ch u rch ­
warden in 1509 ; th e last is a p a lim p sest brass, h a vin g on th e reverse
the effigy o f Sir J o h n P o p h a m k n t. a distin gu ish ed sold ier o f th e reign
o f H e n ry Y . ; and th ere are several d e p o site d s t o n e s ; on th e sou th side
o f th e chancel are m em orial w in d ow s to C harles L a m b , th e essayist an d
p oet, d. 27 D ec. 1 8 3 4 ; an d to H e n ry an d R a ch e l, th e ch ild ren o f th e H on .
