Thero is a classical side fo r those boy s w ho are preparing d irectly fo r
the un iv ersities; & a m odern side, adapted m ore especially to the study
o f science, m athem atics <& m odern languages. T he sch ool is inspected
b y the Board o f E ducation and by the O x ford and C am bridge Schools
E xam ination B o a r d ; its S chool C ertificate is accepted hy the A rm y
C ouncil in lieu o f the A rm y Q u alifyin g E xam ination, and it is recogÂ
nised by the,C ollege o f P hysicians and the C ollege o f Surgeons as a
place o f instruction. A m on g other S chool organisations there is a
flourishing cadet corps o f the Officersâ T raining Corps. T he school
year is divided in to three terms & throe vacations.
T h e annual
value o f the scholarships tenable a t the School at present am ount
to about £ 700. Julius P alm er m . a . fe llo w o f M agdalen C ollege, O xford,

T he visitation
takes place usually on the 18th Oct. There are tw o â W h ite S cholarÂ
sh ips,â tenable at St. Joh n âs College, O xford , each o f .£100 p er year fo r
fo u r years, on the fou ndation o f S ir Thom as W h ite ; six â A ppleton
Scholarships â o f £ 6 per annum, and a â â Spokes Scholarship â o f £10
per a n n n m ; the â L aud Scholarship,â o f the value o f £ 20 . and â â C ouncil
S cholarships.â T he school has been closely connected w ith the C orÂ
p oration, the M ayor being ex-officio chairman o f the govern ing body.
U nder a new scheme, dated 4 p ril 1st, 1908, the A lderm en & Burgesses
o f the C ounty B orough o f R eading becom e the governors o f the schools
responsible fo r its finance. L arge additions, at a cost of £ 24 ,000 , have
n ow been m a d e ; these consist chiefly o f seven new class-room s & a d Â
m inistration rooms, new laboratories & lavatories, library, workshops &e.
