C AVEESH AM is a separate p arish , situated a m idst p ictu resqu e
scenery, on the n orth b a n k o f th e T h am es, and con n ected w ith th e
rem ainder o f th e borou g h b y an iron b rid ge. T h e parish church of
St. P eter, o rig in a lly N orm a n , is an edifice o f flint, w ith ston e d ressin gs,
consisting o f chan cel w ith aisle, nave, aisles and a w estern tow er w ith
plain parap et con tain in g 6 b e l l s : it w as p a rtia lly restored and reseated
w ith open benches in 1857, w hen a v e stry w as bu ilt, and w as further
restored in 1879 and th e tow er rebu ilt at a co st o f £ 3 .5 7 0 : the nave
arcade, a p o rtio n o f the origin al N orm an ch u rch , con sistin g o f circular
arches, on plain round p illa rs, w ith oth er an cien t fea tu res, w as then
d estroy ed , b u t th ere is a N orm a n sou th d o o r w a y : th e chan cel arcade,
o f tw o arches, is P erp en d icu la r and relieved b y panelled w o r k : th e
stained east w in d o w is a m em orial to J o h n S teph ens esq. o f CaveTsham
R ise, and th ere a re sev eral o t h e r s : th e chu rch affords 550 sittin g s, all
free.
T h e chu rchyard w as closed to in term en ts an d a n ew burial
ground at H em denn opened in Ju n e, 1885. T h e re g ister d ates from the
year 1597. T h e liv in g is a vica ra g e, gross y e a rly value £ 3 0 0 , n et £ 2 8 5 ,
w ith residence, in the g ift o f C hrist C hu rch , O x fo rd , an d h eld sin ce 1916 b y
the R e v . R a lp h Sadleir S ton ev M .A . o f that co lle g e , w ho is also r e cto r . In
