PAN G B O TJRliE is a parish and large carved oak in the Arabesque style.
village beautifully situato on the banks of
the Thames, with a station on the Great
Western railway, 41I) m iles by rail and
45 hy road from London, 5.) west-northwest from R eading and n south from
W allingford, in the Southern division of
the county, hundred, petty sessional divi­
sion and county court district of Reading,
Bradiield union, rural deanery of Bradheld, archdeaconry of Berks and diocese of
Oxford. The village is lighted with gas
from works erected in 1863. The church
of St. James the Less is an edifice of flint
and stone in the Decorated style, consist­
ing of chancel, nave, north aisle, south
porch and an embattled western tower
containing a clock and 6 h e lls : in the
church is a curious m onum ent with efligv
to Sir John Davis, ob. 1625, who was
knighted at the taking o f Cales, in Spain :

members, were erected in 1903 to com ­
m em orate the coronation of K ing Edward

in the north aisle are free. The register
dates from the year 1556. The living is

buted ' yearly. Bere Court, the residence
of George Booth Tate esq. is situated in
a picturesque and retired s p o t : in 1230
it. was given by Robert de Bingham, Bishop
o f Salisbury, to the abbot and monastery
of Beading, and on the dissolution of that
