S t. M a r y â s , Castle stre e t, a stru ctu re o f b rick , situated on th e
north side o f C astle street, an d erected in 1798 as a d issen tin g chapel
by seceders from th e ch u rch o f St. G iles, w as a fterw ard s con v ey ed to
the C hurch o f E n glan d and reopen ed in 1836, w ith variou s alteration s,
including the erection o f a p o r t ic o w ith five C orinthian colum ns su p p ortÂ
ing a pedim ent and a recta n g u la r p edim en ted bell to w e r a b ov e it, co n Â

T he ecclesia stical parish o f T i x e h u r s t S t . G e o r g e w u s form ed from the
parish o f T ileh u rst b y O rder in C ou n cil 29th Ju n e, 1882, and in corp orated
in the b orou g h o f R ea d in g M ich . 1887: th e ch u rch , in St. G eorg eâs road ,
w est o f the barracks, erected at a cost o f £ 4 ,0 0 0 , is a stru ctu re o f red
b rick in the E a rly E n g lish style, con sistin g o f ch a n cel, nave, n orth aisle and
a turret c o n ta in in g on e b e l l : th ere is an in scribed brass to M a jor-G en era l

B erkshire R e g im e n t, w h o died 6 th A u g . 1 8 8 6 : the w est w in d ow is filled
w ith stained g la ss, erected b y M a jo r T u rn er, of the R o y a l B erkshire
R eg im en t, in m em ory o f h is w ife ; and in 1892 tw o stain ed w in d ow s w ere
inserted in the north aisle b y officers o f the 1st B atta lion R o y a l B erkshire
R egim en t, to M a jo r F . B . R . H e m p h ill, w h o w as k illed b y an acciden t at
M alta' w h ilst p la y in g p o lo , June 8 tli, 18 91: there are o th e r m em orial
w ind ow s to M rs. W a lte r H a rp e r and to officers an d m en o f the 2nd
B atta lion B erk sh ire R e g im e n t: the chancel w a s ad d ed in 1893 at the
cost o f S ir W alter an d L a d y P alm er ; a handsom e w ro u g h t iron chan cel
screen w ith gates was erected b y the late v ica r and his w ife in m em ory
o f L ieut. R o b e r t A . S tew a rt R .H .A . w h o died a t U m balla, In d ia,

B attalion o f th e B erksh ire R eg im en t w ho fell in South A fr ic a : a tw o ligh t w in d o w in the n o rth aisle has been filled w ith stained glass b y
M a jo r-G e n e ra l' S tew art, a lso in m em ory o f those w h o d ied in th a t
war ; tw o stained glass panels h ave b e e n p la ce d in the ch an cel apse to the
m em ory o f M iss V i v i a n : there is also a fine altar cross to the m em ory
o f A lb e r t R y d e r : th e old colou rs o f th e B erkshire R e g im e n t w ere
placed here in 1 9 0 8 : this is the m ilita ry chu rch fo r th e regim ents
qu artered h e r e : there are sittin g s fo r 433 persons. T h e reg ister dates
from th e y e a r 1881. T h e liv in g is a v ica ra g e , gross y ea rly value £ 3 0 0 ,
w ith residen ce, in the g ift' o f th e B ish o p o f O x ford , and held sin ce 1897
by th e R e v . W a lte r H u g o H a rp er M .A . o f U n iv e r sity C ollege, O x ford .
T h e church o f S t . M a r k , in th e K e n sin g to n road, is a d istrict church,
and has 500 s it t in g s ; th e R e v . E rn est H e n r y S ten n in g M .A . o f S elw yn
C ollege, C am bridge, is p riest in charge.
T h e church o f S t . P e t e r , in the ecclesiastical parish o f E a rley , was
consecrated S ept. 21st, 1 8 4 4 ; it is an edifice o f b r ic k in the E arly
E nglish sty le , con sistin g o f chan cel, nave o f five h a y s, aisles, vestry,
organ cham ber, south p orch and a to w e r at the n orth -w est an gle, cow
