the parishes o f St. M a rv and St. L auren ce : the chu rch, hu ilt o f flint, and
situated a t the corn er o f Cavershain m a d . was re-con stru cted in 1863 from
the ancient church o f the m onastery o f th e G rey F ria rs, th e north transept
being n ew from th e fou n d ation s, and th e w e st and sou th w alls o f th e south
transept, w ith th e tw o eastern colum ns o f th e sou th aTcade, r e b u ilt : it
now consists o f a v e r y w id e nave o f five h a ys, aisles and transepts, hu t has
at present n o chancel, it havin g been fou nd im possib le to acqu ire the
ground u p on w h ich it should stand : th e aisles are separated from the
nave b y P o in te d arches su pp orted b y clustered colu m n s, an d the w est
w in d ow , a p o rtio n o f th e an cien t stru ctu re, is on e o f th e larg est and
finest exam ples o f reticu la ted tra ce ry in ex isten ce, and in its g m o v e s
fragm ents o f stained g lass o f great thick ness w ere met, w it h , and a
few old tiles o f p ecu lia r d esign d iscov ered in the floorin g have been
relaid : un der the n orth p ie r o f th e chan cel aTch a- p e rfe ct skeleton was
found w ith o u t a n y coffin , e v id e n tly laid in th e fou n d ation s w h en th e
church was first b u ilt, and arched ov e r w ith m a s o n r y : th e church w as
reopened D ec. 5, 1863, b v the late B ish op W ilb e rfo ro e . o f O x ford , in
