ReceDt research has proved that the school existed in 1120 & before the
i: foundation o f the M onastery, b u t m ention o f it rarely occurs in old
chronicles t ill its reconstruction in 1485,in w hich year Joh nT horne,A bbot
o f Reading, having suppressed the H ospital o f St. John, was directed b y
H enry V II. to assign its revenues to som e charitable institution, in p u r­
suance o f w hich comm and he transferred them to this school, one of his
officers, W illiam Done, g iv in g 200 marks in aid o f its refoundation.
Queen Elizabeth granted the school by charter in 1560 a valuable endow­
ment c& in the reign o f Charles I . A rchbishop Laud, a native o f R ead­
ing, left ¿ 2 0 a year to the head master and established a “ visitation ”
o f the school, w hich is still m aintained. T he g reat hall o f the sup­
pressed hospital was fo r many years used as a schoolroom , until in
1790 Dr. R ichard V alp y, w h o long held the head mastership, erected a
new one at his ow n cost. T he foundation stone o f the present buildings,
w hich cost ¿ 8 0 .0 0 0 , o ccu pyin g a p lo t o f ground in Redlands, 13 acres
in extent, & situated about a mile south-east o f the town, was laid b y
H is late M ajesty K in g E dw ard V II. then P rin ce o f W ales, on J u ly
1st, 1870, & th ey were form ally opened by the late L ord H atherley,
