T h o C a th o lic ch u rch , d edicated to S t. Jam es an d situ ated near the
F o rb u ry g arden s in F o rb u r y ro a d , was b u ilt in 1840 at th e expen se of
the late J . W h e b le esq. o f BuJmershe C ou rt, fro m the d esign s o f M r . A .W .
W e lb y P u g in , arch itect, and is an edifice in th e N orm a n style, consisting
o f apsidal chancel, nave and a w estern gable beU -cote w ith one b e l l : the
fo n t is fo rm e d fro m a square b lo c k o f o o litic lim estone, fou n d w ith in the
lim its o f th e F o rb u ry , in 1835, th e u p p e r p a rt o f w h ich form s a square of
27 inches, an d has a d e e p ly -cu t ch ain -like p attern o f stem s and foliage
ru n n in g co n tin u o u sly alon g its fo u r s i d e s ; b e io w th is, an d at each
c o rn e r, are rem a in s o f carved cap itals, e x q u isitely w r o u g h t w ith w reaths
and in te r tw in in g k n o t s ; in th e p re s b y te r y are p reserv ed a seal b elon g in g
to on e o f the a b b o ts, an d a m assive iro n k e y , fou n d in th e ab bey
g r o u n d s : in 1883 th e san ctu ary w as d ecorated in colou r, un der th e d irecÂ
tio n o f M r. P h ilip W e stla k e , o f L o n d o n : th e chu rch has ab ou t 260
sittin gs.
T h e C ath olic chu rch o f S t. W illia m o f Y o r k , in U p p e r R e d la n d s roa d ,
is a sm all edifice o f b rick , o p e n e d in 1906, and w ill seat 200 persons.
T here are fiv e C on g re g a tio n a l, seven B a p tis t, s ix W e s le y a n (in clu d in g
th e m ission at E lm P a r k h a ll), tw o P re s b y te r ia n , on e U n ita ria n an d
fiv e P rim itiv e M e th o d ist chap els, tw o F rie n d s â m eetin g houses, tw o
room s w h ere B re th re n m eet, and S a lv a tio n A r m y ba rrack s.
C avershani' R o a d P re sb y te ria n ch u rch , b u ilt in 1902 a t a co st of
£ 5 ,5 0 0 , is o f red b r ic k w ith sto n e dressings in th e P e rp en d icu la r sty le,
an d consists o f a n a v e and aisles, d iv id e d b y an axcading on ston e,
colum ns, and a to w e r w ith spire 80 -fe e t in h eig h t a t th e sou th -east
a n g le : there are sittin g s fo r 520 p e r s o n s ..
T rin ity C on g reg ation al ch a p e l, a n edifice in the L a n cet sty le , w as bu ilt in
1848 b y seceders fro m B ro a d S treet ch u rch , w h ich is th e old est in the
t o w n , d atin g fro m 1662 ; th e re is also a C on gregation al ch ap el in C astle
street.
T h e G en era l B a p tist chap el is in K in g â s ro a d , an d claim s, as a m eetin g p la co fo r N o n co n fo rm ists, so m e a n tiq u ity , th e con g re g a tio n h a v in g been
o b scu rely tra ced to the re ig n o f H e n ry V I H . ; it was first fou n d ed in
C u rzon street in 1640, r e m o v e d t o H o z ie r street in 1752 an d to its p resen t
site in 1834, and was enlarged in 1858 an d 1 8 9 0 ; in 1901 the chap el was
in stalled w ith e le ctric l i g h t ; th e p rin cip al W e sle y a n ch ap el is in Q ueenâs
road . G rov ela n d s B a p tis t ch ap el, at th e ju n c tio n o f W ils o n road and
O x fo rd roa d , is a b u ild in g o f b r ic k an d terra c o tta , cap able o f seating 450
persons. T h e P r im itiv e M e th o d ist chapel, in L o n d o n street, w as built
in 1866, and w ill seat 900 p erson s.
