T H E B L U E C O A T SCH O O L,
Brunswick house, 42 Bath road, was founded in 1646 by M r. Richard
Aldworth, of Ruscombe, Berks, & M ilk street, London, m.p. for Reading
& Auditor of the Exchequer, who gave for its endowment the sum of
£4,000, augmented in 1666 with £1,000 given by Sir Thomas Rich bart.
of Sunning; in 1720 by £1,200, given by Mr. John West, & with smaller
bequests by M r. John Pottenger & M r. John Hall. In 1723, Mr. W illiam
Malthns gave a rent-chargo of £90 yearly, for the education of 10 boys, to
be clothed in green. There are now 33 boys on this foundation, who
are clothed, fed & educated, besides 30 day scholars. Entrance by
competitive examination.
Ten Boarding Scholarships of the annual
value of about £36 each & ten day scholarships of about £7 each are

Broad street 1790 & to Russell street 1885; training school for domestic
servants; for children of parents in Reading ; income from rents &
endowments £300; the vicars of three old parishes are the trustees;
& they & three other gentlemen are governors; the school is superÂ
intended by six ladies, & is under the chargejof Miss Hicks as matron
