secluded village' 2$ m iles north -w est from
T ilehurst station and 2J south -by-w est
from Pangbourne station, both on the
Reading and O xford section of the G rea t
Western railw ay, 4 n orth -w est from R ead­
ing, in th e N ew b u ry division of the
county, hundred o f L a n gtree, union of
Bradfield, p e tty sessional d ivision
of
Henley, county cou rt d istric t of R eading,
rural deanery of H enley, archdeaconry and
diocese of O xford, bounded on the south
by the river Tham es and sheltered by a
ridge of h ills 011 th e n orth.
The road
from C aversham to M apledurham , shaded
by a row of pines n early th e w hole d is­
tance, form s a p ictu resq u e and agreeable
prom enade: the nearest b rid ge up the
river is a t W h itch u rch , about 2J m ile s ;
and down, a t C aversham , 4 m i l e s t h e r e
is a tow-path fe rry across the riv e r from
the Roebuck H otel, abou t a m ile below
the lock. T he ch urch of S t. M arg are t is
a building of flint and stone, of la te P e r­
pendicular date, co n sistin g of chancel,
nave, north porch, sou th chapel and a
western tow er of b rick , raised 24 feet in
1863 and containing 6 bells and a clock
presented b y W illia m I V . and b earin g the
Royal in itia ls : the chapel of the B lou n t
fam ily, on the south side, is ra ile d off

from th e rest of th e ch urch, b u t its sty le ,
though la te, is superior to th a t o f th e
ch u rch p r o p e r: between th e chapel and
the n ave is a m onu m ent, w ith recu m b en t
figures, to S ir R ich ard B lou n t k t. d. 22
Nov. 1619, and E lizab eth (M oore) his w ife,
also surroun ded b y iron r a ilin g s : h ere is
also a brass to S ir R ob ert B ardolf, 1395:

aisle w ere en tire ly restored in 1863, an
organ cham ber form ed, the g a lle ry re- •
m oved and th e tow er ch am b er throw n into
the chuTch, th ree w indow s w ere filled w ith
stained glass, and a stone porch and two
new w indow s b u ilt : th e organ w as p re ­
sented in 1889 b y S ir C h arles D ay R ose
b art. M .P ., J .P . of H ardw ick H ouse, W h it­
ch urch, w ho also gave in 1909 a stained
glass w indow in m em ory of three of h is
so n s; th e in terior, in clu d in g th e chancel,
is d ecorated in polychrom e, and affords
130 sittin g s. T h e re g iste r dates from the
year 1627. The liv in g is a vicarage, n et
yearly v a lu e £ 3 77, w ith 52J acres of glebe
and residence, in the g ift of E ton C ollege,
and held since 1883 b y th e R e v . F ra n cis
S t. John T h a ckera y M .A ., F .S .A . late
Fellow of L incoln C ollege, O xford . H ere
is a h ospital fo r six aged m en and wom en.
