Dictionary. The celebrated Eichard Valpy d.d. was head master from
1781 to 1831. Under Archbishop Laudâs deed the visitors of the school
are the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, the President of
⢠St. Johnâs College & the Warden of A ll Souls College.
The visitation
takes place usually on the 18th Oct. There are two â W hite ScholarÂ
ships,â tenable at St. Johnâs College, Oxford, each of ¿100 per year for
four years, on the foundation of Sir Thomas W h ite ; six â Appleton
Scholarships â of ¿ 5 per annum, and a â â Spokes Scholarship â of ¿10
perannum ; the â Laud Scholarship,â of the value of ¿20, an d 1â Council
Scholarships.â The school has been closely connected with the CorÂ
poration, the Mayor being ex-officio chairman of the governing body.
à nder a new scheme, dated A pril 1st, 1908, the Aldermen & Burgesses
of the County Borough of Beading become the governors of the schools
responsible for its finance. Large additions, at a cost of ¿24,000, have
now^ been made ; these consist chiefly of seven new class-rooms & adÂ
ministration rooms, new laboratories & lavatories, library, workshops &c
