the Tham es, w ith a station on the G rea t

W allingford, in th e N ew b u ry d ivision of
the county, h un dred, p e tty sessional d iv i­
sion and cou n ty cou rt d is tric t of R eadin g,
Bradfield union, ru ra l deanery of Bradfield, archdeaconry of B erks and diocese of
Oxford. T h e v illa g e is ligh ted w ith gas
from works erected in 1863. T h e church
of St. James th e L ess is an edifice of flint
and stone in th e D ecorated sty le , con sist­
ing of chancel, nave, north aisle, south
porch and an em battled w estern tower
containing a clock and 6 b e lls: in the
church is a curious m on u m en t w ith effigy
to S ir John D avis, ob. 1625, who was
knighted a t th e tak in g of C alcs, in S p a in :
the p u lp it is a b e au tifu l specim en ofcarved oak in the A rabesque style. Oak
choir stalls, su bscribed fo r b y C hurch
members, w ere erected in 1903 to com ­
m em orate the coronation of K in g Edward
the S e ve n th : th ere are 300 s it t in g s ; all
in the north aisle are free. The re g iste r
dates from the y e a r 1556. T h e liv in g is
a rectory, n et y e arly valu e ¿ 3 6 0 , w ith 4
acres of glebe and residen ce, in the gift
of C.
. M inchin esq. and held since 1913
by the Rev. H u b ert Ph illipps Pope B .A .
of U n iversity C ollege, D urham . H ere are
Congregational and P rim itiv o M ethodist
chapels, and a F rien d s’ M eetin g house.
Breedon’s ch arity of ¿ 3 2s. fid. and Down­
ing’s of ¿ 4 15s. 6d. fo r coals are d istri­
buted yearly. B ere C o u rt, th e resid en ce
of George Booth T ate esq. is situ ated in
a picturesque and re tire d s p o t: in 1230
it was given by R obert de B in gh am , Bishop
of Salisb ury, to th e abb ot and m onastery
of Reading, and on th e d issolu tion of th at
house S ir John D avis acqu ired i t by p u r­
chase, and it afterw ard s, in 1671, cam e
into the possession of the la te John
Breedon esq. B ow den G reen is the re si­
dence of M rs. S p agn oletti.

and Y e -Old G eorge hotels. T h e soil is
gravel ; subsoil, g ra v el and chalk. T h e
chief crops are w h eat, oats and b arley.
T he area is 1,833 acres of land and 9 of
w a te r; rateab le valu e, ¿ 1 7 ,9 5 4 ; th e pop u ­
lation in 1911 was 1,677.
