“ T y g le h u rst,” is a v illa g e and parish on
the river K en n et, and bounded on the
north by the riv e r T h am es, i j m iles south
from T ileh u rst station on th e G reat W est­
ern ra ilw ay and 2J w est fro m R eading,
in the S outhern division of th e coun ty,
hundred of B ead in g, B radfield union,
petty sessional d ivision and cou n ty court
d istrict of R eadin g, ru ral dean ery of
Bradfield, archdeaconry of B erks and dio­
cese of O xford.
T h e ch u rch o f St.
Michael, alm ost en tirely re b u ilt in 1855,
is a b u ild in g of stone in th e Decorated
style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles,
south porch and a w estern tow er, w ith
pinnacles and spire, con tain in g 8 bells and
a clo c k : there is an alabaster reredos and
carved oak stalls, and several of th e w in­
dows are stained : the south aisle and the
base of th e tow er are th e only rem ain s of
the old b u ild in g : th ere are 400 sittin gs,
300 being free. T h e re gister dates from
the year 1559. The liv in g is a rectory,
gross yearly v alu e £910, n et ¿ 7 0 0 ,. in ­
cluding 150 acres of glebe, w ith residence,

in the g ift of M agdalen College, O xford,
and held since 1905 b y the R ev. H en ry
R ich ard Cooper S m ith D .D . of th a t co l­
lege, and su rrogate. T he re cto ry house
was co m pletely destroyed b y fire in A p ril,
1887, and re b u ilt in 1889. Here is a Con­
gregation al chapel, founded in 1797, of red
b rick w ith stone dressin gs, in th e M odern
G o th ic style, w ith sittin gs fo r 300 p e r­
sons : in the rear of the chapel are
spacious school and other ro o m s; the
W esleyan chapel, fo rm erly a m ission h all,
w ill seat about 300. T h e V illa g e H all,
in V icto ria road, used fo r p u b lic m ee t­
in gs, b u ilt in 1893, is a stru ctu re of brick
and w ill seat 350 p erso n s: there is also
an iron m ission h all. T h e “ R oeb u ck,” an
excellent h otel, was erected in 1882 on
the banks
