T W Y F O E D , con stitu ted a c iv il parish
23 June, 1895, on the banks of th e Loddon w ater, is a v illa g e and e cclesiastical
parish, form ed A p ril 14, 1876, o u t of the
hamlet of T w yford , in the lib e rtie s of
Broad Hinton and W h istley , in th e parish
of H urst, un der th e “ Benefice A c t, 1838 ”
(1 and a V ie t. c. 10 6); it h as a station
on the G rea t W estern ra ilw ay, w h ich is
also the ju n ctio n of th e lin e to H enley,
and is 5 m iles east from B ead in g, 7J
south-west from M aidenhead, 4 south
from H enley-on-Tham es and 34 from
London, and is in th e N ew b u ry division
pf the county, p e tty sessional d ivision and
union of W okingham , cou n ty co u rt d is­
trict of R eading, ru ra l deanery of Sonning, archdeaconry of B erks and diocese
of Oxford. The v illa g e is lig h te d w ith
gas, and supplied w ith w ater b y the
W okingham R u ra l D is trict C o un cil’s W argrave and T w yford W a te r W ork s, situated
at Hare H atch. The ch urch of S t. M ary
is a bu ild ing of flin t in th e E a r ly E n glish
style, consisting of five bays, aisles, north
porch and a sm all w estern tu rre t contain­
ing 2 b e lls : it w as b u ilt in 1846, chiefly
at the cost of th e late B ev. A . A.
Cameron, vicar of H u rst, and M iss Curre y ; a new north aisle w as added in
1883 a t a cost of ¿ 1 ,9 9 3 : an organ ch am ­
ber was erected in 1908, and th e church
was enlarged at th e east end and v estry
added durin g 1909; in 1910 th e tow er,
west end b ap tistery and sm all v estry
were com pleted, the cost of alteration s
and additions since 1908 a m ou n tin g to
¿4,700; a peal of b ells w as added in 1913
at a cost of ¿ 7 0 0 : th ere are 420 sittin gs.
The register dates from th e y e a r 1847.
The livin g is a v icara ge, net y e arly value
¿320, with residence, in the g ift of the
Bishop of O xford, and held since 1903 by
the Bev. R obert W illia m H arrison Acw orth
M.A. of W orcester C o lle ge , O xford. There
is a W esley h all, and a C ongregational
chapel, re b u ilt in 1897, w ith 250 sittin gs.
The F ire B rigade consists of e ig h t m em ­
bers. T he Tw yford W orkin g M en’ s C lub
was established in 1898, and has a rea d ­
ing room &c. H ere are alm shouses,
founded by S ir B ich ard H arrison k t . and
endowed in 1707 by L a d y Frances, d au gh ­
ter of Thom as (H ow ard), 3rd E a r l of
Berkshire, and w ife of S ir H enry W inchcombe bart. of B u ckleb u ry, for six poor
persons in the parish es of H u rst, W innersh, Bearwood and Tw yfo rd , each of
whom receives 7s. 6d. w eekly, and a new
gown every second year.
