S H IP L A K E is a very exten sive parish
p leasan tly situ ated on th e le ft bank of
th e T h am es, w ith a station on th e Henley
branch of th e G rea t W estern ra ilw ay , 3
m iles south from H enley-on-Tham es and
4J m iles n orth-east from R eading, on thé
h ig h road from th e form er to th e latter,
in the H en ley division o f th e coun ty,
hundred of Binfield, p e tty sessional d iv i­
sion of H enley, union and cou n ty court
d istrict of H enley, ru ra l dean ery of Henley
and archdeaconry and diocese of O xford.
T h e village, placed on a ch alky em inence
overh an gin g th e riv e r, com m ands a fine
prospect of th e woodland scenery of the
adjoin in g county of Berks and th e Su rrey
h ills beyond. T h e Loddon, celebrated by
Pope under the nam e of “ L odon a,” enters
th e Th am es n ear S h iplake lock ; the
n earest b rid ge up th e riv e r is at Sonning,
d istan t 2^ m ile s, and down, a t H enley,
3J m iles. A fe rr y connects th is place
w ith W argrave. T h e ch urch of S S . P eter
and P au l is a stru ctu re of flin t and stone,
w ith arches and colum ns of chalk in
various sty le s from the T ran sition N or­
m an period downwards, con sistin g of
chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and
an em battled tow er at th e north-w est
an gle con tain in g 8 . bells, 2 of w hich were
added in 1902 to com m em orate th e long
reign of H er late M ajesty Queen V ictoria,
and a clock : in general th e church is of
the Decorated era, b u t th e arches of the
nave arcades are T ran sition N orm an, the
south aisle b ein g E arly E n glish and the
fon t Decorated : th ere is an E a rly E n glish
p iscina in th e sou th aisle and many
ancient floor tiles' rem ain : th ere is a
brass to John Sym onds and Jane his
w ife, c. 1540, and m em orials to A rth u r
Blundon, 1607, and to M r. Plow den, w ith
a fine b u s t: the church w as re b u ilt in
1869 and a chancel and organ cham ber
added, from plans b y th e late G eorge E.

n ew one added : th ere are seven stained
w indow s, some o f w hich are filled w ith

R obert Joseph Ph illim ore bart. d. 19
M ay, 1885 : th e late Lord Tennyson, poet
laureate, was m arried in th is church,
June 13, 1850: th ere are 200 sittings.
T he re g is te r of b ap tism s and burials
dates from th e year 1672; m arriages,
1674. In the ch urchyard is a memorial
cross erected in 1908 b y th e R t. Hon,
S ir W alter G . F . P h illim ore bart. and
m em bers of h is fam ily. T he liv in g is a
vicarage, gross yearly value ¿3 9 2, net
¿2 60 , w ith residence, in the g ift of the
Dean and Canons of W indsor, and held
since F eb ru ary, 1913, by th e Rev. Charles
A rth u r W illiam A ylen M .A . of Keblo
C ollege, O xford & Cuddesdon. Near the
ch urch is a parish room . Peppard Parish
Room is in th is parish and faces Peppard
Com m on. T h ere are four cottages and
gardens in this parish , the rents of which,
¿ 2 1 yearly, are applied to th e repairs
of the church, after paym ent of ¿ 3 to
the clerk.
T h is v illage is a favourite
reso rt for boating, fishing and bicycling
parties. C r o w s le y . P ark is the seat of
Col. John B askerville D .L ., J . P . ; the
m ansion, b u ilt in th e reign of James n.
is a fine b u ild in g of red brick w ith an
em battled parapet, and is surrounded by
avenues of fine t r e e s ; one avenue in the
rear of th e m ansion is a m ile in length;
the park, in w hich are k ep t 200 head of
deer, is 230 acres in extent, thickly
wooded and noted for its fine cedar and
oak trees. The Coppice is the residence
of the R t. Hon. S ir W alter G eorge Frank
P h illim o re b art. D .C .L ., L L .D ., J .P .;
