Bradfield, archdeaconry of B erks and dio­
cese of O xford.
The church of St.
N icholas, re b u ilt in 1838, chiefly at the
expense of the la te Rev. John W ild er
M .A. rector 1836-92, is an edifice of stone
and flint in th e E a rly E n g lish sty le , con­
s istin g of chance], separated from the
nave b y a trip le arch, nave, ' organ
cham ber, north porch, and a western
to w er w ith pinnacles and a lo fty spire,
con tain in g 6 bells, th e g ift of th e late
recto r in 1879: th e windows are all
sta in e d : the ch u rch contains several
m arble tab le ts to m em b ers of the W ilder
fa m ily : the m arble fon t w as presented
by John W ild er esq. in 1733; in th e year
1845 it was inclosed in new stone w ork,
w ith fo u r m arble colum ns given by the
R ev. J.
W . E den, and placed in the
p resen t b a p tis te r y :

w ith shrubs and evergreens, and
in th e centre is a beau tifu l cross of P o rt­
land stone, about 14 feet h igh , th e g ift
of the
lato recto r, ric h ly carved w ith

various em blem s of th e Blessed Redeemer
and th e H oly T r in ity : there are 120 sit­
tin gs. The re g iste r dates from the year
1730. T h e liv in g is a rectory, tith e rentchargo ¿ 1 9 8 , average ¿ 1 3 0 , net yearly
valu e .£130, in clu d ing 26 acres of glebe,
w ith .residence, in the g ift of, and held
since 1908 by th e R ev. H enry Charles
W ild er M .A . of New College, Oxford.
S ulh am House, the seat of M rs. John
W ild er, is a handsom e residence with
extensive grounds, com m anding fine views
of woodland scenery. The Rev. Henry
Charles W ild er M .A . is lord of th e manor
and prin cipal landow ner. The soil is
sand and lo a m ; su b soil, cla y and gravel.
The ch ief crops are w heat, barley and
roots. T h e area is 705 a cre s; rateable
valu e, £ 1 ,0 1 6 ; the population in 1911
was 116.
