1911, consists of clerestoried nave w ith north aisles, chancel and
Vestries; there are 300 sittings. There is a Free chuTch (Baptist) in
the village, built in 1872; a Catholic chapel, erected in 1902 and
dedicated to Our L a d y and St. A n n e ; a Congregational chapel, built
in 1827; a W esleyan church, in W oodcote road, built at a cost of
£2,000, w as opened in June, 1909. A cemetery cf 4 acres was opened
in M ay, 1885, to which a further 1¿ acres was added in 1903. T h e Police
Station here was erected in 1884. John (Fitzgerald), 18 E arl of Kildare,
who died 9 N ov. 1707, left b y his w ill, dated 19 March, 1704-5 to
5 A pril, 1707, 18 acres of land, the rents now amounting to £17, to
be applied to the use of the pooT; and his w idow, Elizabeth, Countess
of KUdare, by w ill, dated 3 Oct. 1748, gave £100, laid out in the
purchase of £105 7s. 6d. Old South Sea Annuities, now represented by
£116 15s. 2d. £2| per Cent. Consols, the dividends of which are applied
to the apprenticing of poor children; M r. J. Stephens left £500 in like
Consols, the interest to be spent in providing clothing to be given
to the poor in the month of January in each y e a r ; Mrs. Burchett’s
charity of £49 yearly is for the maintenance of dissenting places of
w o rsh ip : Mrs. Clissold left £100, the interest of which is expended
in bread, distributed to the poor on the anniversary of her death.
There are many good houses in this neighbourhood. W illiam Thompson
Crawshay esq. D .L ., J.P . of Caversham Park, is the principal landowner.
The soil is chalk and gra v el; subsoil, chalky. The chief crops are wheat,
barley and oats. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1911
was 9,858.
L o w e r O a v e rsh a m , J mile east, E i o i e r G r e e n , l i miles north, and
C a n e E n d (in the ecclesiastical parish of Kidm ore E nd), 4 miles north­
west, are in the civil parish of Caversham. Th e church of St. John the
Baptist, L o w er Caversham, built in 1888, at a cost of £5,187, is an
edifice of flint w ith stone dressings, in the E arly English style, and con­
sists of chancel, nave, south aisle and a western turret containing one
b e ll: in 1898 a stained window was placed at a cost of over £300: there
are 350 sittings. There is also a W esleyan chapel, erected in 1898,
and a convent of the Visitation. The public hall at Emmer Green,
belonging to M artin John Sutton esq. J .P . of W a rg ra v e Manor, Berks,
is used for lectures and religious services. The church of St. Barnabas
at Em m er Green was opened for public worship in 1899;.'
