VILLAGES DIRECTORYâ1919.
Sindlcsham, ball a mile north, is inÂ
cluded in the ecclesiastical parish of Bear
Wood, and consists of about 60 cottages,
an inn and the school. The place -was
almost entirely rebuilt by the late John
Walter esq. (d. 1894), and has a Baptist
chapel.
A halt on the South Eastern and ChatÂ
ham Railway (Reading and Wokingham
line), known as Sindlesham and Hurst
was opened in January, 1910.

B U R G H F I E L D is a parish, 2J miles
south-east from Theale station on the
Great Western railway and 3 south-west
from Reading, in the Newbm y division
of the county, hundred of Theale, Bradfield union, Reading petty sessional d iviÂ
sion and county court district, rural
deanory of Bradfield, archdeaconry of
Berks and diocese of Oxford. The river
Kennet flows on the north. The church
of the Virgin Mary, rebuilt at a cost of
¿2,300, and re-constructed in June, 1843,
is an edifice of brick and stone in the
Romanesque style, consisting of chancel,
rebuilt in 1892, at a cost of ¿2,000, enÂ
tirely defrayed by the late Richard Benyon esq. of Englefield (d. 1897), Miss
Sophia C. Thursby, of Brighton, and the
late Arthur Harvey Thursby esq. D .L.,
J.P. of Culverlands (d. 1909), nave, tranÂ
septs, and an octagonal western tower,
with a small dome and containing 6 b e lls:
the tower was restored in 1901 at the sole
cost of Ernest Chance e sq .: a t the west
