S H I N F I E L D is a v illa ge and parish, 4
m iles south from R ead in g, in th e N ew ­
b u ry d ivision of th e cou n ty, p a rtly in
the hun d red of T h eale and p a rtly in the
hun d red of C h arlto n , union of W oking­
ham , p e tty sessional division and county
cou rt d istric t of R eadin g, ru ra l deanery
of R ead in g, archdeaconry of B erks and
diocese of O xford.
The riv e r Loddon
flows on th e south-east. T h e ch urch of
S t. M ary is an ancien t edifice of flin t and
brick , in th e E a r ly E n glish style, con­
sistin g 0/ chancel, nave, south aisle,
north porch and low em b attled western
tow er, w ith som e N orm an w ork, contain­
in g 6 b e lls : in th e ch urch are several
m o n u m e n ts: the seats are of oak and the
p u lp it of carved o a k : the east w indow is
sta in e d : th e church wns com pletely r e ­

stored in 1857, a t a cost of £ 1,60 0 : there
are 320 sittin gs. T h e re g iste r dates from
the y e a r 1649. T h e liv in g is a vicarage,
y e a rly v alu e £200, w ith 26 acres of glebe
and residence, in th e g ift of the Dean and
Ch apter of H ereford, and held since 1908
by the R ev. H erb ert L lew elyn Rice M.A.
of Queens’ Coller a, Cam bridge. There is
a v illa g e h all a School green, erected in
1913. A F ree J h u rch is at School green.
T h e ch arities am ount to about £8 yearly,
and are for cloth in g and coal. Alexander
B ly tl1 Cob ham esq. who is lord of the
m anor, and Jam es H erb ert Benyon esq.
J.P . o f E n glefield H ouse, Englefield, are
th e p rin cip al landow ners. T h e soil is
