THE

TRIUMPH

OF

Electric Light.
Dr. George Carpenter, Editor of the “ British Journal
of Children’s Diseases,” the well-known authority 011 childlife, remarks in one of his .works :—
“ The air of a nursery cannot be too pure. I therefore,
do not advise you to have gas in it, as g a s in burning
gives off quantities of c a r b o n i c a c i d and s u l p h u *
r e t t e d h y d r o g e n , which v i t u a t e t h e a ir . The flame
of a lamp or a g a s b u r n e r will p o i s o n the air with
carbonic acid gas to the same extent as tw7o adults. I
wish 1 dared omit the discussion of gas. Well I know7
the b a n e f u l p r o d u c t charged with all sorts of l u n g
c o m p l a i n t s , p o i s o n i n g all members both of the
animal and vegetable kingdom, is respected in all your
houses. I must accordingly temporise with you. Do
n o t h a v e g a s in the night nursery. The most healthy7
light that you can use is of course the E l e c t r i c L i g h t ,
and if you are so situated that yTou can obtain it, you
should lose 110 time in making arrangements for an
E le c t r i c I n s t a l l a t i o n . ”

And “ The Standard,” writing on recent developments,
says:—
“ Thus Electric Eightiug with all those conditions
which make it so great a luxury7, is now made available
at a l o w e r p r i c e than gas lighting.”
