Reading Volunteer Defence Force.
The Reading Volunteer Defence Force, now part of the 1st Battalion Berkshire Volunteer Defence Regiment, photographed at its first church parade, Reading School chapel, July 18, 1915. After the service the men formed upon the playing field and a sum of money was presented to Sergt.Major Burling, the septuagenarian instructor of the force, in reward for his services.
