A t th e tim e these ph otogra ph s w ere taken, Lieut.-Colonel F . A . Deare was officer commanding
th e Depot Royal Berks Regiment. A pp oin ted t o th is post on th e outbreak of
w ar, he sacrificed th e leisure o f a w ell-earned retirem ent and w orked so hard in th e cause
o f recru itin g th a t he overta xed h is stren gth and fe ll a victim to influenza.
H is death, a fte r a w eek' s illness, rem oved one w ho com bined in a singular degree th e qualities of th e
British officer and th e English gentleman and had given his life fo r his cou n try as surely
as any soldier in the firing line.
