Mr. J. Frederick Hawkins, surveyor of the Berkshire County Council, joined the Royal Engineers with a special appointment on the staff of General Gibbons at the Dardanelles. Unfortunately, he was stricken with serious illness and had to undergo an operation for appendicitis. After sojourn in hospital at Alexandria, he was invalided home. Several other officers of the Berkshire County
Council were on military duty at the same time, among them the Assistant Clerk and the Chief Constable.
