Loyal Men, and Women too.

The military parade mentioned on the previous page was an imposing spectacle made up of the 35th and the 32nd Divisional Signal Companies R. E.'s, the 263rd and 264th Companies A. S. C. with bands, parts of the Berks R.H.A., the Berks Yeomanry, the 2nd South Midland Mounted Brigade A.S.C. with band and the 4th Batt. Royal Berks Regiment with band, and nurses and orderlies of the Berks Voluntary Aid Detachments, while members of the Berks Volunteer Defence Regiment lined an open square outside the Municipal Buildings, the saluting base. Khaki clad men swung past with even step and upright figure, bandsmen played martial music, and nothing was more striking than the rows of Red Cross women who were working in the hospitals and taking their share in patriotic service. In the evening there was a great meeting in the Town Hall, at which eloquent and earnest speeches were made in explanation of the war situation. Lieut.-General Bethune, after speaking of the valour of the British soldier, said one aged mother in Cornwall wrote to him stating that of her six sons serving their King and country five had been killed and asking "Will you please give me back the sixth?" When he pointed out the great need of every single man, the patriotic old lady replied "Please keep him then." That spirit, said General Bethune, was the kind of spirit needed throughout the country, among not only the soldiers and their relatives, but among the munitions workers, the coal miners, and all classes. In the same strain addresses were delivered by the Mayor, Mr. W. A. Mount, M.P., Mr. C. Duncan, M.P. (Barrow), and Lieut.-Colonel H. G. Henderson, M.P., the last-named of whom lauded the records of the Royal Berks Regiment and the Berks Yeomanry. A special cheer was raised for the parents of Reading's V.C., who were seated on the platform.
