Wednesday, October 13th, 1915, is an important date
in the diary of the 5th Royal Berkshires, for it saw the
battalion make its first attack.
The event was at the Quarries at Hulluch. Great courage was shown by the
battalion, which Colonel F. W . Foley, D .S.O ., commanded, and survivors have praised the enterprise of the
bomb-throwers, of whom about 32 went forward and not
m ore than; ten returned. " Each deserved the D .C .M. "
said a Wokingham private. There was great loss : eleven
officers were killed, wounded or missing.
Amongst the missing were Major W . K. Bayley and.
Capt. Frank Mount, brother of the M ember for S. Berks.
Among the officers known to be killed in the engagement
were Lieut. Stephen Reiss, Streatley, and Lieut.
Trewartha-James, an old Bradfield boy, each of them a
young m an o f high patriotic instincts and manly qualities.
" H e was a splendid officer and a gentleman"
wrote a wounded private o f Lieut. Trewartha-James,
whose commanding officer w rote: " He led the attack
most gallantly. . . All the officers loved him ".
