Y.M.C.A. at Churn Camp.
The whole of the resources and energy of the Reading Y.M.C.A. has been concentrated upon the necessary work of catering for the needs of the men in camps, or in hutments, or in billets, and Churn Camp furnishes an excellent example of the moral, social and physical benefits which radiate from the Tent of the Red Triangle. There are Bible study meetings, Testaments and Gospels are distributed and there is evidence that a living religion is presented to these men in camp and that numbers of them have been influenced for good. The social side is always popular. A camp sing-song high up on these rolling downs is an inspiring event: bronzed bright-eyed fellows crowd the tent in their hundreds, roar the choruses with great heartiness and join with fervour in singing the closing hymn and evening prayer. The physical programme includes the organisation of football teams and league matches and athletic sports meetings, and there are frequent raids on the refreshment bar, where a small staff of honorary workers toils from morn to night in order to satisfy appetites sharpened by the fresh air and an outdoor existence.
