LORD DESBOROUGH INSPECTS BERKS VOLUNTEERS
" A most imposing display" was the phrase used by Lord Desborough K.C.V.O., after his inspection of the 1st Batt. Berkshire Volunteer Defence Regt. on Wednesday June 21st 1916. Having paraded the streets there was a meeting of members of the force and the public in the Large Town Hall, the gathering being notable for the fact that Lieut.-Col. Leslie Wilson D.S.O. , M.P., delivered his first public speech for two years and a plea for wider civic recognition was made by the battalion hon. secretary Mr Rydill. The meeting was a success all the way, from the inspection to the closing of the Town Hall doors, for many assembled in the Station Square for the former event and a large crowd remained outside the hall to give Col. Wilson a friendly cheer.
