RETURN OF THE 2nd BATTALION ROYAL BERKSHIRES AND THE 1/1ST BERKS YEOMANRY.
Civic Reception in the County Borough.
On Saturday, May 17, the people of Reading showed their appreciation of the County Regiment's efforts during the war to uphold the reputation won by their predecessors and to add to the valorous traditions already associated with Berkshire fighting men. The occasion was the homecoming of the cadre of the 2nd Batt. Royal Berks Regiment, the old "66th Foot", and the welcome extended to them was just as sincere and enthusiastic as that which greeted the 1st Batt. a few weeks previously. The gallant "66th" have come back from the war with many more glorious pages added to their already wonderful history. As in days of yore, however, Berkshire's glory has been dearly bought with Berkshire's blood, and perhaps few other regiments have suffered so cruelly during the war as this 2nd Battalion, whose casualty lists are a remarkable testimony to their unexampled bravery and endurance. A short summary of the engagements taken part in by the 2nd Berkshires will be found on page 939.
The Arrival.
The cadre were due to arrive at the South Eastern Railway Station at 2.30 in the afternoon, and long before that hour the streets were beginning to fill with people. Troops of Boy Scouts marched up with sprightly step and lined the route to be taken by the home-coming troops. As the appointed hour drew near Station Square, Station Road and some other portions of the route became densely crowded, and as it had been rumoured abroad that a number of the Berkshire Yeomanry (Machine Gun Troop) were to be included in the welcome, the Yeomanry's cap badge became very conspicuous in the crowd. A large company assembled inside the station. The Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire, Mr. J. Herbert Benyon, was there to perform the official "welcome home", and accompanying him were Col. Wilson, D.S.O., M.P., and Mrs. Wilson, Major General F. P. Ready, C.M.G., D.S.O., Colonel H. F. Coleridge, D.S.O. (C.O. Troops, Reading), Colonel G. S. Willes (late of Berks Yeomanry), Lieut.-Colonel J. G. R. Walsh (C.O. Depot Battalion), Colonel W. Thornton, Col. R. J. Collins, Colonel A. F. Ewen (151st T. F.), Majors W. Aldworth (late Quartermaster 2nd Battalion), H. Lickman (Sandhurst College, late 2nd Battalion), F. Gossett (Royal Berks), A. S. Turner (Depot), T. J. Wheble (Berks ...
