Return of the 2nd Batt. Royal Berkshires - continued.

... the final and victorious operations. Both units have suffered terrible casualties; our debt to those who have laid down their lives for their country is great indeed, and it is little enough that we can do to repay. To those who return we say with all our hearts, "Welcome!" "

Colonel LESLIE WILSON said that as Member for the Borough and as Vice-Chairman of the County Territorial Association, he had been asked to bid them a few words of welcome. Everyone in Berkshire had been truly proud of all the Berkshire units, and it was a great satisfaction to know that units formed during the war had also upheld the reputation of the 1st and 2nd Battalions. He heartily welcomed them home, and congratulated one and all on the part they had played in the great struggle just passed through.

Colonel ISAACS, replying, said it had been their privilege during the past 4½ years to represent the county of Berkshire, and that reception would long be remembered in the regiment. The knowledge that the people of Berks had taken so great an interest in them had been an inspiration to all ranks. There were no better men than those recruited from that county.

Captain BLYDE said all ranks under his command realised the great honour that had been paid them by the Mayor and citizens of Reading.

Officers and men were entertained to refreshments in the Council Chamber and the Small Town Hall respectively, and later in the evening a meat tea was served at the Barracks.

MAIWAND AND NEUVE CHAPELLE.

The history of the 2nd Batt. Royal Berks Regiment begins in the Peninsular War, where they won the laurel wreath in the crossing of the Douro. They took part in the engagements at Albuera, Vittoria, Talavera and Nivelle. Their next act of service was in Afghanistan, where they fought at Kandahar, and for ever immortalised themselves at Maiwand. Citizens may read the names of those heroes and their epitaph by General Primrose on the Lion erected to their honoured memory in the Forbury Gardens. The Battalion served throughout the South African war, and at the outbreak of the present war was in India, from where it proceeded to England in September, 1914.
