H .M.s. Hibernia 1896-99 and- on H.M.S. Australia .in 1902. He was in 1895 appointed second-lieutenant in the
RM.L.L; in 1896 he became lieutenant; and in 1901 captain. . He served with the ' Nayal Brigade dilring the
South African War 1899-1901. being meqti!!ned in despatches and receiving thc Queen's medal and fiye . clasps and
