forceful methods. and as a repr esentative of Battle
Ward lor many years he has brought his business
acumen to hear on matters of ' public import . H e
entered th e Council some twenty years ago. and as an
evidence 01 the esteem in whi~h h,e was held by his
coll eagu'es and their appreciat ion 01 hi . qualities he
was elected Mayor 01 the Boro ugh in 1905, alt hough.
at that time ,he had on ly been a. member 01 t he Council
five years and had no t held the pos iti o n o f chairman
01 any Committee, although he had given evidence 01
his ability as a member 01 several 01 them. H e is a
staunch Liberal and Nonconlorm ist , and was the first
Baptist to be elected Mayor 01 Read in g.
