LOSS TO PUBLIC LIFE.
The late Mr. Alderman OWEN RIDLY, who for two years was Mayor of Reading, for thirty years was a member of the Town Council, and for an even longer term actively interested himself in education. He was formerly one of the principles of Messrs. Wm. Ridley and Sons, timber merchants. He was an ardent Congregationalist, and built Park Institute as a memorial to his late son Lionel.
TERRITORIAL PROMOTED.
Second Lieutenant G. E. MAGGS, 8th Batt. Royal Berks Regiment, who went to France a private in the 1/4th Battalion Royal Berks Regiment and while there was recalled to England to take a commission. He was on the clerical staff of Huntley and Palmers, Ltd., and is a good player of cricket, hockey and tennis.
GOLDEN WEDDING.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. HENRY MARTIN, The Bungalow, Gipsy Lane, Wokingham, on celebrating fifty years of happy married life. They have four sons - Mr. W. T. Martin, a Town Councillor and Ex-Mayor of Wokingham and a leading business man in the district; Messrs. F. G. and W. B. Martin, useful Wokingham citizens and members of the Fire Brigade; and Mr. C. H. Martin, an organist at Southsea. They have a daughter, Mrs. Brenton, of Newport. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin have the best wishes of their neighbours and continued health and happiness.

FUNERAL OF LIGHT BRIGADE HERO.
MAJOR EDWARD PHILLIPS BURIED AT EARLEY.
Conspicuous among the floral tributes at the burial of Major Edward Phillips, Hillcroft, Reading, was one from the eleven remaining survivors of the Balaclava Light Brigade Charge, in which the gallant officer saved a wounded private's life. There remains only one officer who participated in the glorious feat of arms - Captain Percy Smith, who sent a wreath to be placed on the flag-draped coffin of his old comrade, who was laid to rest in Earley churchyard.
WOUNDED SOLDIERS AT FOOTBALL.
Teams representing the Royal Berkshire Regiment and the Reading Tramways employees played a football match at Elm Park. The Berkshires were men who had been overtaken by wounds or sickness at the front; but they proved the stronger side and won by seven clear goals, of which Corporal Badcock scored four straight off the reel. Teams:-
Royal Berkshire Regiment. - Corporal Lovelock (goal); Private Evans and Private Townley, (backs); Lance-Corporal Franklin, Private Good and Private Saunders (half-backs); Corporal Green, Corporal Badcock, Corporal Smith (captain), Private Drewett and Private White (forwards).
Tramways. - E. Butler (goal); J. Dawe and H. Blissett (backs); E. Chapman (captain), A. Lunn and W. Levey (half-backs); W. Anderson, J. North, R. Hardiment, J. Wiggins and C. Phillips (forwards).
