GIFTS AND KISSES FOR RECRUITS

PHYLLIS DARE'S AUDIENCE AT
READING TOWN HALL.
In the interests of recruiting, concerts with novel features took place at Reading and Newbury. At an interval Mrs Lionel Harris, an American lady, appealed for recruits. Then Miss Phyllis Dare, the musical comedy actress, sang "Your King and Country Need You" to the piano accompaniment of the composer Mr Paul Rubens. At a signal from the platform, candidates for khaki stepped forward, and those who passed the doctor were presented with watches, pipes and pouches as souvenirs. Phyllis Dare donned the recruiting sergeant's cap and led them to the front. At the Newbury concert kisses as well as gifts were besowed on the recruits. Scores of soldiers sang "Tipperary" and other chorus classics and battle-broken comrades addressed appeals.
