TH E MOBILISATION AT READING.
With war declared and mobilisation proclaimed, the early days of August saw a great
wave of loyalty and union sweep Berkshire. Reservists of the Royal Berkshire Regiment,
promptly obeying the call to arms, streamed to the Depot from workshop, factory and
farm and quickly slipped in to khaki.
Men who had fought side by side on the South African veldt and had returned to civil life cheerfully yet calmly fell into the ranks; they had done their "little bit" in the past but were anxious to do even more. The necessary formalities completed, off they marched amid the cheers of the crowd outside the Barracks gates.
