DECLARATION OF WAR

BISHOP BOYD-CARPENTER. As the weakness
and evasiveness of Pilate were responsible for
that tragedy of 1900 years ago, so the guilt of the
tragedy of the war lies at the door of Germany.
England stands for loyalty to her pledged word.
She stands also for liberty, for the right of every
nationality to develop its own life. Germany
stands for the opposite principle. This would be
the dullest world imaginable if everyone were
drilled like a German dragoon. The question is
whether the war will leave us better men - more
unselfish, with a nobler vision, not pigmies, but
children of God.

LORD READING. - I believe that we shall get
good out of this war. We are learning to be
better men, learning the spirit of sacrifice and
learning not to be self-indulgent. Above all, we
are learning that great, noble and lofty ideals
count for far more than all the material things.
One word about the women! They have shown a
marvellous spirit of patriotism and have come forward
to help in a way that has astounded many
people. They never murmur, but only ask that
more burdens may be placed upon them.In conclusion,
England is absolutely clean-handed in the
war and is fighting in order that liberty may prevail.
We shall gain the victory - because right
must triumph in the end.
