Tlie units under canvas were
the 3/4th Royal Berks Regiment,
the 3/ls t Berkshire Yeomanry
and the 3/ls t Berkshire
Royal Horse Artillery, the
3/2nd South Midland Mounted
Brigade Army Service Corps.
Lieut. Col. and Hon. Col. W.
A. Ellison, M. V. O. V. D. was
in command of the camp. The
happiness and welfare of the
men were carefully studied by
Mr. Keyser, who allowed them
to stroll about his lovely
grounds with their friends and
to bathe in the lake, while the
cricket ground and pavilion
were placed at their disposal.
Swimming sports and cricket
matches were popular events,
and whist drives and concerts in
the Parish Hall were a favourite
means of recreation in the evening.
Canteens and hospital
accommodation were provided,
and the Y.M.C.A. tent was a
centre of religious and social
work that was highly appreciated.
A church parade was
held on the ground every Sunday,
the officiating minister being
the Rector (the Rev. F. R.
Horwood), and some of the recruits
supplied the places in the
Parish Church choir of men who
had joined the colours. Not the
least pleasant feature of the
camp was its nearness to Reading,
which enabled the men's
friends to spend an enjoyable
afternoon in visiting this
delightful spot. The Lord
Lieutenant (Mr. J. H. Benyon),
the Mayor of Reading (Mr.
Leonard Sutton), and other
members of the Berkshire Territorial
Association visited the
camp and were delighted with
the site and the arrangements
made for the men's comfort.

The accompanying photographs were
taken in July, 1915.
