13th Berks Voluntary Aid Detachment
Magnificent service has been rendered by the Berks Vountary Aid detachments, sxity per cent of which have been mobilised up to the end of August 1915. At the same date the county had a roll of 33 women’s detachments and seven men's, with a total of 1049 women and 302 men. Under the scheme for forming an ambulance service for the conveyance of wounded at Reading War Hospital, it fell to the Berkshire branch of the British red Cross to provide a men's detachment for stretcher parties.The 13th Berks Voluntary Aid Detachment was mobilised for this duty and porved very efficient under skilled direct ion. In addition, it supplied orderlies for other Red Cross hospitals. The detachment consists of 110 Reading men and was first commanded by Mr W.H. Powell of The Laurels, Tilehurst (headquarters) who obtained a commission and was scucceeded by Mr F. Thake, formerly the quartermaster.
