ROYAL BERKSHIRE REGIMENT RECRUITING MARCH.

One of the most picturesque,
as well as practical,
forms in which the need
of recruits was advertised in
Berkshire was the tour of
the recruiting party and
band in the summer of 1915.
A detachment of the 4th
Battalion and the 9th
Battalion Royal Berkshire
Regiment, preceded by drums and
fifes, marched through the
county and halted at the
towns and larget villages
while an officer or other
authorised person addressed
the assembled inhabitants.
He dwelt on the needs of the
nation, pointed to the
sacrifices made by the Royal
Berkshire Regiment, and
called for men to fill the
gaps. These appeals to the
people in their own village
streets and market squares,
even when there was no
immediate response, left the
audience something to think
over, and sowed the seed of
fruit to be gathered later.
The recruiting party was
received with that friendliness
and hospitality due to men
who had volunteered for the
highest service of a patriot
and were moving among
kinsmen. At several places
leading residents invited
them to tea or lunch, at
others the villagers regaled
them with the pick of their
orchards.
